  The expansive Madison Children's Museum provides no shortage of engaging, hands-on exhibits for kids of all ages. In addition to an active art studio and herb garden, exhibits include a rooftop chicken coop, global village, and a "Trash Lab" where youngsters can learn to rethink our relationship with waste.   Just minutes from Madison in the community of Sun Prairie, the Explore Children's Museum is another great option for family fun in the Madison area. This non-profit museum is community-based and visitor funded, offering a unique array of themed play rooms, studio spaces and permanent and rotating exhibits. Daily themed "Draw Alive" classes are always popular. Admission is free on the third Thursday of each month from 9am to 7pm, and just $8 for kids and grown-ups all other days.

  Located just a few miles from Madison, the community-supported Black Earth Children's Museum includes more than 50 exhibits, including an interactive play veterinarian clinic and the Driftless Den, where children can learn about the unique geology and natural history of the Wisconsin Driftless Area. The museum also hosts events such as art classes and yoga, and is home to a toy library where members can borrow a variety of toys and games. Admission is just $6 for kids and adults.

  Operated primarily through volunteers and community support, the Baraboo Children's Museum started as a small pop-up play space in 2018 before moving into its permanent home just a year later. With an affordable daily admission fee of $6, the Baraboo Children's Museum strives to be a nurturing space where kids can learn and engage through play and hands-on activities. Weekly Wednesday craft days are a big hit, and new events are always being added to the schedule.
  
  
• UW–Madison Geology Museum - 1215 W Dayton St, Madison, WI 53706
  Although it doesn't cater specifically to children, the Geology Museum at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers some compelling exhibits that will fascinate kids and grown-ups alike. The museum is home to a vast collection of more than 150,000 geological and paleontological specimens. In addition to exhibits highlighting unique rocks, gemstones, minerals and meteorites, the Geology Museum is known for its fossil collection. A historic mammoth skeleton is a crowd favorite, along with numerous dinosaur bones and other prehistoric fossils. Best of all, the museum is open to the public completely free of charge more than 300 days a year.
