Wisconsin Stargazing

Marvel at the night sky and all the stars on Saturday, April 29, to celebrate International Astronomy Day. Here are a few spots that offer some of the best stargazing in the area.

  1. Devil's Lake State Park - S5975 Park Rd., Baraboo, WI 53913
Take in the magnificent views at Devil's Lake State Park, only a short trip from Baraboo homes for sale. With upwards of three million visitors each year, Devil's Lake is the most popular state park in Wisconsin. The park's namesake feature is also known as "De Wakacak," which translates to "Spirit Lake." Bring Fido along to enjoy the on-leash pet swim area and the pet picnic area. Park hours are 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily, and admission is $13 per vehicle.

  2. Blue Mound State Park - 4350 Mounds Park Rd., Blue Mounds, WI 53517
As the name suggests, Blue Mound State Park, just 20 minutes from Verona homes for sale, is noted for its location atop the largest hill in the southern half of Wisconsin, making it a prime location for gazing at the night sky. Three of the pet-friendly park's trails are designated as hiking-only in spring, summer, and fall. Blue Mound is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. - 11 p.m., and admission is $8 per vehicle.

  3. Madison Astronomical Society - UW Space Place, 2300 S. Park St., Suite 100, Madison, WI 53713
The Madison Astronomical Society may sound like a serious academic group, but members come from a wide range of backgrounds around Madison homes for sale. Members have access to the group's dark-sky observatory at Yanna Research Station. Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month, with discussions on a broad spectrum of related topics and occasional appearances by guest speakers. Annual membership fees run from $5-$70.

  4. Lawrence L. Huser Astronomy Center - Wyalusing State Park, 13081 State Park Ln., Bagley, WI 53801
Lawrence L. Huser Astronomy Center is home to the Starsplitters of Wyalusing, a non-profit group with a mission to promote the wonders of stargazing. Located near the border of Wisconsin and Iowa, the astronomy center in Wyalusing State Park is well worth the drive for a less light-polluted view of the night sky. These amateur astronomers were inspired by Robert Frost's poem, "The Star Splitters," which advocated the presence of a telescope "in every town." In addition to members-only meetings and activities, the Starsplitters host monthly programs for the public at Wyalusing State Park.
